Lately I’ve been wanting to try new things with my retouching and editing.  Our style is usually on the safe side focusing on simplicity and cleanliness.  With the recent rebranding of our website into the more grungy and dark feel I felt that my approach towards my editing should evolve as well.  Not to say that I’ve abandoned the clean editing that I’ve been doing; I feel that I should showcase the other extreme of my editing as well.

James Before & After

toolbarI started off with a photo that Mark took of James using his wide angle Canon 10-22mm lens.  After some quick RAW to JPEG conversion in Adobe Lightroom I brought the photo into Adobe Photoshop.

Take a look at my layer toolbar and you’ll see some of the many layers I’ve used to put everything together.  Most of the layers are just copies of his photo which I like to keep just in case I want to go back to something.  It’s always great to have a backup.. nothing’s worse than not having a backup to go back to and having to start over again.

I did a bit of masking, dodging, and burning to have him match the grungy backdrop as best as possible.  I also added some soft light to his eyes to give it an extra POP.  After some curve adjustments for contrast and I ended up with what you see in the final photo.

It’s amazing to watch photos transform from an ordinary picture into something completely different.  Hopefully you enjoy the photo manipulation I did.  Let me know what you think!

Full Moon over Virginia Beach

September 15, 2008

Last Friday, I purchased my Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L glass and wanted to see how well it captures details and compare it to the other lenses I have.  So I realized that the moon was full and the skies were clear enough to get some nice photos of the moon.  I figured I’d try it out once again.  My first attempt of moon photography was a few months ago with my Canon EF 75-300mm USM lens and that was pretty darn successful!  But now that I got my self a nice L glass in our possession, I wanted to see if it can take better photos of the moon.

So with the Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L glass mounted on my Canon 40D with the live preview engaged, I aimed at the moon and calibrated the camera.  I zoomed all the way to the 200mm mark and with the moon on my cross hair, I engaged the live preview on the Canon 40D and zoomed in further to about 10x on the live preview to get a nice crisp focus on the moon.

It’s amazing how much this lens captured the moon’s surface and you can actually see the moon moving away from the focus area of the camera!  I’ve zoomed in so much that not only can I see the moon’s surface, but also am able to see how fast the moon is orbiting the earth!  So if you were ever to take pictures of the moon, please keep in mind that the planet Earth is spinning around the sun and that the moon is orbiting us at the same time – so there will be movement on your subject!

So this February Crystal and I have been really busy with photography and web design, I’ve yet to post random photos that I have taken over the course of this month! I am really the kind of photographer that would just snap away at anything I think is interesting or just catches my attention, whether I am on the road, parking lot, outside the front door, or out somewhere armed with my camera!

Here’s a few photos I’ve snapped over this month I think worth posting about!

Full Moon
Description: A Full Moon, night before Lunar Eclipse of February 2008
Location: Virginia Beach, VA

This single photo of the full moon was taken the night before the lunar eclipse that occurred a week ago. This shot was hard to take since I didn’t have my trusty tripod on hand, so camera shake was surely to occur. Luckily, my camera was equiped and lens are both equipped with image stabilization which helped a lot when I took the shot, it definitely helped with camera shake that would have caused massive blur on the image.
